'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mustansir. AH 623-640 / AD 1226-1242. AR Multiple Dirham (24.3mm, 11.02 g, 9h). Without mint or date. Obverse: la ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah / al-Mustansir billah / amir al-mu’minin, Reverse: al-imam al-‘azam / al-Mustansir billah / amir al-mu’minin, all within square frame with double border. Apparently unpublished. VF. Excessively rare.
The only ruler named on this remarkable coin is the caliph al-Mustansir, and so from a numismatic standpoint it is classified as an ‘Abbasid issue. From its style and fabric, however, it clearly resembles similar coins issued by the Great Mongols at Kurraman, notably the magnificent 10-dirham pieces struck there during the reign of Queen Töregene in AH 641. Like the present coin, these name only the caliph, and do not mention the Mongol ruler under whose authority they were in fact struck.
This appears to be the only recorded coin of this type which names al-Mustansir; the coins of Töregene mentioned above cite his successor, al-Musta‘sim.
