Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (27mm, 2.63 g, 11h). Revolutionary Period issue, struck under Abu Muslim or ‘Imran b. Isma‘il. Sijistan mint. Dated AH 132 (AD 749/50). Obverse margin: Qur’an 42:23, divided by four large annulets at half-cardinal points, Obverse field: Square frame containing la ilaha illa / Allah wahdahu / la sharik lahu with mint and date legend around / Reverse field: Standard Umayyad legends with large annulets above and below. Klat –; al-‘Ajlan –; cf. Baldwin’s Islamic Coin Auction 27 (10 December 2014), lot 169 (same reverse die). Near VF, some weakness on reverse. Excessively rare.

Dirhams with standard Umayyad legends, as opposed to the the verse from Qur’an 42 associated with the revolutionary movements active in the East, were also struck at Sijistan in this year (Klat 448).
