Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (24.5mm, 2.51 g, 5h). Al-Daybul mint. Dated AH 95 (AD 713/4). Klat 337; al-‘Ajlan p. 191, no. 24. Evenly clipped. VF. Extremely rare.
This is an example of the first Umayyad post-Reform dirham coinage from the Indian subcontinent.
The rapid collapse of the Sasanian empire meant that Muslim forces first reached the frontiers of Pakistan and India in the time of the Rashidun, but further expansion eastwards proved difficult. The caliph ‘Uthman called a halt to any plans to conquer the region, and instituted a policy whereby the Muslims sought to extract tribute from the kingdoms beyond the frontier. Renewed attempts to subdue the Indian subcontinent began under the Umayyads, but little progress was made for several decades. Finally, in the early 90s/710s, pirate activity against Muslim shipping in the region prompted al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf to entrust his nephew, Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Thaqafi, with the responsibility of dealing with the situation once and for all. Launching a two-pronged expedition by land and sea, Muhammad b. al-Qasim finally captured the port city of al-Daybul in AH 92 (AD 710/11), which then became a bridgehead for operations further inland.
Umayyad post-Reform dirhams are known from three different mints in the region: al-Daybul (struck in AH 95), al-Qanda (Gandhava, struck in AH 96), and al-Hind (struck in AH 97).
