SCARABS. Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty. Seti I. 1290-1279 BC. Steatite. (17x11 mm). Back carved with fine outline details for the wing, mouth and legs of the scarab. Base engraved with Pharaoh “SETI I” cartouche, reading “RA MN MAAT”, and “DESHRET”. Pierced for suspension. Extremely rare. In excellent condition and attractive.

From the Joseph A. Dow Collection; Ex Classical Numismatic Group 410 lot 990; Christie’s London ‘Fine Antiquities’ (10 July 1991), lot 85 (part of).

RA-MN is AMUN RA , the chief Egyptian Deity and the supreme Sun God. DESHRET 0n the right of the scarab represents the crown of Lower Egypt “RED CROWN”. MAAT, on the lower right of the scarab, represents truth, justice morality and balance. The two hieroglyphics in the middle of the scarab represent the “WATER OF THE NILE”. on the bottom of the scarab are the small “MUMMIFORM” figures to do the work in the afterlife of the deceased. Pharaoh SETI’s reign had a stabilizing effect on the Egyptian kingdom. regardless of the exact length of this Pharaoh’ reign, which has been much debated, Seti made large stride in re-establishing the religious traditions which were so disrupted by the reforms of Pharaoh AKHENATEN (Pharaoh TUT’s father), Equally important were the Pharaoh’s many military achievements, most notably, his successes in bringing back the HITTITE forces and recapturing former Egyptians territories. SETI’s Tomb was discovered in 1817 AD and his mummy itself in 1881 AD.
