Maximianus. First reign, AD 286-305. Antoninianus (22mm, 3.64 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck under Carausius, AD 291-293. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Hilaritas standing left, holding long palm frond and cornucopia; S|P//MLXXI. RIC V.5 3604 (this coin cited and illustrated); Bourne 12. Dark brown surfaces, some roughness. Good Fine. Unique. The RIC V.5 plate coin.
From the Chris Bailey Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Review 18.2 (Second Quarter 1993), no. 88.
It is this cataloger’s perspective that this coin’s bust type is radiate and cuirassed rather than radiate, draped, and cuirassed. See fn. 3218 for discussion in RIC V.5.
This coin appears to be unique and quite possibly the same as the example noted in the old RIC V.2 (no. 33). The footnote there notes that the coin was shown to the BM in 1930 and was given a rarity of R3. This coin was then possibly in Seaby’s inventory when it was acquired by CNG in the early 1990s and appeared in the CNR for the second quarter of 1993 as no. 88 (but was there unillustrated, likely due to its rough condition). No other specimen has since appeared nor is cited in the new RIC V.5 (publ. 2025). Bourne in his 2009 article likewise only cites RIC V.2 (publ. 1933). no. 33 for the type.
