Valerian I. AD 253-260. AR Antoninianus (21mm, 3.11 g, 6h). Antioch mint. 1st emission, AD 253-255. Radiate and draped bust right / Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia. RIC V 278; MIR 36, 1558a (same obv. die); RSC 3. Toned, porosity, flan crack. VF. Rare.
This type was issued along with very rare laureate bronzes for Valerian and Gallienus usually called Asses of the same type, although notably lacking S-C on the reverse. These continued to be minted under Quietus and Macrianus, although these are extremely rare. It is quite possible that these laureate bronzes are in fact small medallions, as this is unprecedented for bronze coins from the period, and in fact Rome mint issues struck concurrently do include S-C.
Closing Date and Time: 7 October 2026 at 14:40:20 ET.
