MOESIA INFERIOR, Istrus. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Pentassarion (27mm, 16.23 g, 1h). Struck AD 198-209. Laureate head right / The Great God, wearing kalathos, on horse prancing right, holding cornucopia and reins; to left, bird perched right on column; to right, lighted altar. Beldianu, Cronologia SS-S2T1 (this coin illustrated); AMNG I 494 var. (obv. legend); Varbanov 614. Green patina. Near VF. Extremely rare, only this coin in CoinArchives.

Ex Künker 111 (18 March 2006), lot 6861; Künker 59 (26 September 2000), lot 523.

This reverse type has been described as Zeus, Serapis, Theos Megas (the Great God), and Mitras. Beldianu describes him as Zeus, seemingly due to the eagle on the column, but the kalathos and cornucopia are not attributes typically associated with him. Darzalas, the Great God popular throughout much of Thrace and Moesia, may be a more accurate attribution.
