Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (22.5mm, 3.49 g, 2h). ‘C’ mint. Struck circa AD 287-290. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Carausius, on horseback riding left, raising hand and holding short transverse scepter; C. RIC V.5 (2271) (this coin cited and illustrated). Dark brown patina, rough surfaces. Good Fine / Fair. Extremely rare. One of two examples cited in RIC V.5 and the RIC V.5 plate coin.

The other cited coin of this type was recorded by Webb citing Sir Henry Hoyle Howorth’s collection from the first decade of the 20th century. The Howorth coin has not since resurfaced (it could even be the same as the present coin with its former pedigree lost). Consequently, the fair reverse condition of this coin results in confirmation required for the type.
