Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (22.5mm, 3.57 g, 7h). ‘C’ mint. Dated, but struck circa AD 287-290. [IMP CAR]VSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / [P M TR] P IIII COS P P, Carausius, togate, seated left on curule chair, holding globe in extended hand and transverse short scepter; C. RIC (2266a) (this coin, cited and illustrated). Dark green-brown patina, roughness, cleaning/smoothing scratches, some details enhanced. Fine.

All of Carausius’ dated coins are extremely rare. And while many of them do have legible dates (more or less), they remain somewhat enigmatic since the specific dates or events they refer to are uncertain. Carausius of course never held consular power in Rome, though this did not stop him from claiming such titles (and others) for himself on his coins. As such, general struck dates have been provided here (and in RIC V.5, see fn. 2231) rather than a specific year or date.
