Crowned confronted busts of Fernando and Isabel; above, cross flanked by pellets / Crowned coat-of-arms; behind, eagle facing, head left, with wings spread and wearing nimbus crown. Cf. The double excelente was introduced in 1497, the year before Christopher Columbus embarked on his third voyage. It immediately became a recognized international gold denomination and soon became a pattern for other European gold coins of the period. Because of its doubled weight, comparable to the double ducat, or the dual portraits of Fernando and Isabella, the coin became popularly known in England as the dubloon.
