John V Palaeologus. 1341-1391. AR Basilikon(?) (12.5mm, 0.46 g, 1h). Uncertain mint. Struck circa 1376/9-1391. ωA Xω TO Θ, crowned facing figure of John, wearing loros, holding cruciform scepter in right hand and resting hand on chest / M, Saint Michael the Archangel, nimbate and winged, on horseback riding right, holding sword and reins. ВЪВ ВИЗАНТИЯ” in Numismatics, Silligraphy and Epigraphy 21 (2025), figs. 3 var. (= Triton XXVII, lot 970) and 4 var. (both obv. legend). Lightly toned, marks. VF. Extremely rare. One of three known.
This new example of this extremely rare issue features a different obverse legend variety from the Triton XXVII coin. Here, the legend reads around counterclockwise instead of clockwise. Additionally, John’s name is abbreviated to just ωA followed by the hyper-abbreviated Xω TO Θ for “[In] Christ the Godhead.” The remainder of the inscription, found on other silver denominations of this period, is entirely omitted, likely for space. The longer version concludes with, “faithful sovereign and emperor of the Romans.”
