Laureate head left, globe at point of neck / Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm frond. RIC II.1 1286 (R2; this coin illustrated); Lyon –. Brown patina, light roughness. Good VF. Very rare with head left. Exceptional high-relief portrait.

When Vespasian died in AD 79 and Titus was proclaimed emperor, many feared he would be another Caligula or Nero. But he soon emerged as an uncommonly benevolent and conscientous ruler. He took stern measures against informers, sought the advice of the Senate, and spent lavishly on public works and entertainment. When the eruption of Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii and Herculaenium, and a major fire swept Rome months later, his generous relief measures won wide admiration. Unfortunately, while beloved his reign was short-lived, apparently while traveling to the Sabine region of Italy, Titus fell gravely ill and died, in the same house his father died in two years prior. While there is speculation that Domitian may have poisoned him, historical accounts vary.
