Draped bust of Venus left, wearing stephane; small Cupid at point of bust; lituus to left, scepter to right / Trophy of Gallic arms, holding a shield and carnyx in each hand; on left, kneeling bearded male captive seated left, looking right; on right, seated female captive right, resting head in hand. Crawford 468/2; CRI 59; Sydenham 1015; RSC 14; RBW 1640. Toned, with iridescence, small area of light smoothing on reverse. Good VF.

Julius Caesar traced his descent all the way back the goddess Venus, her son Aeneas, the Trojan hero, and grandson, Ascanius, also known as Iulus. Aeneas, the legendary leader of the Romans, was the product of a liaison between the goddess Venus and Anchises, a herdsman who was a member of the Trojan royal family. The depiction of Venus on his coinage was a nod to his nomen Iulia, and the familial connection to the goddess herself.
