Although the moneyer Q. Pomponius Musa is unknown to history, his choice of Hercules Musarum and the nine Muses as coin types is remarkable and clear canting pun on his cognomen. The Muses were nine divine maidens, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory), who the human arts and sciences personified. They were Calliope (Epic Poetry), Clio (History), Erato (Erotic Poetry), Euterpe (Music, lyric poetry), Melpomene (Tragedy), Polyhymnia (Hymns), Terpsichore (Dance), Thalia (Comedy), and Urania (Astronomy).
