The reverse of this interesting nomos features a palm tree added in the background behind the lion, recalling the popular Siculo-Punic tetradrachm type with Dido(?) on the obverse and a lion and palm tree on the reverse. While it is not known precisely why this type appears here at Velia, it is tempting to interpret some connection or alliance with the Punic cities in Sicily.
