LUCANIA, Herakleia. Circa 390-340 BC. AR Nomos (19.5mm, 7.37 g, 1h). Head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet decorated with griffin with straight wings right / Herakles, nude, standing facing, torso right, wrestling the Nemean Lion to right; [retrograde EP] and shell to left. Cf. Work 29 (Skylla on helmet); cf. Van Keuren 47 (same); cf. HN Italy 1376. Deeply toned, edge mark. Good VF. Unique.

From Collection JLT. Ex Goldberg 42 (24 September 2007), lot 13; Classical Numismatic Group 72 (14 June 2006), lot 82; A.D. Moretti Collection (Numismatica Ars Classica O, 13 May 2004), lot 1090.

A griffin adorns Athena’s helmet on a variety of issues from the earlier series at Herakleia (cf. HN Italy 1366-1368), but is unknown on the later full-weight nomoi. This unpublished coin is not a hybrid struck with an earlier obverse die, as the earlier forms of the griffin have a distinctly curling wing, unlike here where the wing is straight. This straight-winged griffin appears regularly on the reduced-weight nomoi struck in the early-mid 3rd century BC.
