EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Philip II of Macedon. 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 13.47 g, 4h). ‘Vogelreiter’ (Bird rider) type. Mint in the Carpathian region. Celticized laureate head of Zeus right / Celticized horseman right; to upper left, bird perched right on branch. OTA 340/2 var. (wreath orientation); Lanz 675 var. (same); KMW 1267-70 var. (same); CCCBM I –. Toned, scratch. Near EF. Very rare.

Though stylistically closer to the ‘Verkehrter Lorbeerkranz’ (inverted wreath) group, this unusual variety features a head of Zeus wearing a wreath with the normal, upright orientation.
