EGYPT, Alexandria. Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Hemidrachm (27.5mm, 13.01 g, 12h). Dated RY 8 (AD 75/6). Laureate head right / Zeus-Serapis standing left, wearing kalathos, extending right hand over Kerberos seated at his feet to left and holding long scepter; L H (date) to right. Köln –; Dattari 403; K&G 20.55; RPC II 2451; Emmett 212.8 (R5). Repatinated brown surfaces, light porosity. Near VF. Extremely rare recut die.

It is not uncommon for the mint to reuse a die and recut a date to be used for the following year. For example, obols of Marcus Aurelius are commonly recut from year L IZ to L IH (year 17 to 18). But this coin’s reverse has been completely recarved from RPC II 2449, a standing Zeus-Serapis with a legend naming him and a date in the left field, this type has had the legend erased and date moved to the right side of the coin. Each specimen in RPC shows clear signs of die erasure with traces of underlying legends remaining from the previous die.

Closing Date and Time: 12 November 2025 at 12:55:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
