ISLANDS off CARIA, Cos. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ (30mm, 17.37 g, 6h). Laureate head right / Hera standing left in biga drawn by peacocks, holding patera and long scepter. RPC IV.2 Online 877; SNG Copenhagen 705. Brown-green patina, some roughness. Near VF. Rare.
From an American Academic Collection.
One of Hera’s principal attributes is her connection to the peacock. After learning of Zeus’ interest in Io, Hera instructed Argus to watch over her, he was the perfect guardian as some of his one-hundred eyes would always be open, even while sleeping. Zeus then turned her into a heifer in an attempt to fool Argus. Hera, suspecting deception, asked Zeus for the heifer as a gift. Zeus, wanting to lie with Io, sent Hermes to kill him, lulling him to sleep with music and stories. Grieving the loss, Hera took Argus’ eyes and placed them on the tail feathers of her sacred bird.
