143, Lot: 282. Estimate $100.
Sold for $180. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Andronicus II Palaeologus. 1282-1328 AD. Æ Trachy (19mm, 1.31 g). Thessalonica mint. Lattice pattern; 8 pointed star at center / Emperor standing facing, holding large patriarchal cross at left and akakia at right. DOC V 820 corr. (no star); Grierson 1451 (same coin); SB 2389 (same).

The fact that the star was not mentioned points more to the rarity of this coin, and especially to the poor strikes of the series, than to an actual variety of the type. On the (single!) coin plated, the central area is flat.
