[Jewelry and Ornaments] BYZANTINE. Gold cross pendant. Circa 5th-6th century AD. Length, including loop 22mm, weight 1.95 g. A hollow-work gold cross constructed of thin sheet gold, 3mm thick. The arms decorated with repoussé dots, a small cabochon garnet mounted in the center. Simple loop hanger. Although not hinged, this may have served as a reliquary, with a small holy artifact sealed inside. Perfect condition, nice early Christian relic.
