Roman Period Bronze Forger’s Die. (29mm diameter, 8mm thick, 54.50 g). A die for a copy of a silver denarius of Nero, 54-68 AD. The face of the die is engraved with a left-facing head of Nero (right-facing on coin and an illegible inscription. At some point the die was rendered un-usable by hammering the sides until it was deformed. The inscriptions also appear to have been defaced. Why this was done, and the die not simply destroyed, cannot be ascertained. Fine condition, brown patina with some encrustation.
