128, Lot: 321. Estimate $500.
Sold for $530. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

TRAJAN. 98-117 AD. Æ Sestertius (34mm, 26.89 g, 5h). Struck 98 AD. Laureate bust right, aegis(?) on left shoulder / Pax seated left, holding branch and sceptre(?). RIC II 390 var. (laureate head); Banti 321; BMCRE 718 var, (laureate head); Cohen -. Good VF, green patina, light tooling, fields smoothed. Very rare.

Banti lists only "1 specimen" of this variety (321). Should the left shoulder be interpreted as draped, the coin would be Banti 320 (only "2 specimens"). The sceptre appears to be missing as well, but it may have been removed by tooling. In any case, the coin is very rare.
