SICILY, Katana. Circa 410 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 17.07 g). Reverse die signed by Prokles. Charioteer driving galloping, spread, quadriga left, holding reins in both hands; Nike flying above placing a wreath on charioteer's head / Laureate head of Apollo left, fish and crayfish before, bay leaf behind; signature PROKLES below neck. SNG Lloyd 899 (same dies); Cahn, Naxos, pl. VII, B (same dies); De Luynes 897 (same dies). VF, reverse slightly double struck. Bold signature. Extremely Rare.

The artist Prokles was most likely a native of Naxos, as most of his work comes from there, though he did engrave a few dies for Katana, including this tetradrachm die and the Litra featured in CNG Sale 42, lot 124. Cahn, in his standard work on the coinage of Naxos, lists only four known examples of this tetradrachm from Katana; the three coins referenced above plus an example in Egger Sale XII, lot 68. A fifth example appeared in CNG sale 57, lot 83.
