A large series of medals honoring prominent Frenchmen of history, designed by leading medallists of the day. The medals in this series were struck mainly between 1816 and 1826 although dates as late as 1838 are known. All the medals feature a portrait of the subject with simple biographical information on the reverse. Jean-Pierre Collignon in La medaille francaise au XIX siecle et l'histoire lists 119 medals in the series, with many pieces being re-struck at later periods.
