Raymond was the grand nephew of Levon I of Armenia, and after death of Bohemund III and his son Raymond the succession was disputed between Bohemund IV (son of Bohemund III) and Raymond Roupen (son of Raymond). Raymond held Antioch for a few years, but the eventual victor was Bohemund IV.
