THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Uncertain. Circa 480 BC. AR Tetrobol (2.51 gm). Forepart of bull left, head reverted; floret to right of head / Bipartite incuse square. AMNG III/2, 9 (Akanthos); SNG ANS -. VF, light porosity. Very rare. ($300)

Although AMNG places this type among the issues of Akanthos, it is more likely an issue of a Thraco-Macedonian tribe. The appearance of the floret dates it to circa 480 BC, when the symbol appeared across the Macedonian and tribal issues. This particular issue clearly does not fit within the Akanthan series at that time, but is quite similar in character and type to the contemporary tribal coinages such as the Derrones and Orreskioi.
