MACEDON, Chalkidian League. 432-348 BC. AR Tetradrachm (13.82 gm, 9h). Olynthos mint; Apollodoro[s], magistrate. Struck circa 417-412 BC. Laureate head of Apollo left / Kithara; APOLLODWRO on base moulding. Robinson & Clement Group F, 5 (A5/ P5); AMNG III/2, -; SNG ANS -. Good VF, minor die rust, slight granularity. ($2000)

This coin reveals a new magistrate in the Chalkidian series; the only appearance of a magistrate in Robinson & Clement's Group F tetradrachms. It is uncertain whether Robinson and Clement examined their specimen in hand, but they apparently could not discern the name on that piece due to its wear. Nonetheless, a close examination of the "zig-zag decoration" on the moulding in their photo reveals what may be traces of some of the letters. The appearance of a magistrate's nearly-full name is highly unusual at such an early date, and may suggest that Group F should be downdated, closer to the normal magistrate groups dated to the 350s-340s BC.
