Sold for $96. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ATTICA, Athens. Circa 168/5-50 BC. AR New Style Drachm (17mm, 4.15 gm). Struck circa 111/10 BC. Helmeted head of Athena right / Owl standing right on amphora; Demeter standing facing, holding two torches, on right, A(?) on amphora, DI below, magistrates XA-PIN-AY-TH, ARI-STEAS ; all within wreath. Cf. Thompson 696 (obverse type; unlisted reverse type); cf. BMC Attica 514 (tetradrachm); SNG Copenhagen -. Near VF, toned. Unique and apparently unpublished.

From the Garth R. Drewry Collection.

Thompson lists only one example of this issue with an uncertain letter on the amphora and SW beneath it. Tetradachms of this same issue exist with DIO; our example may actually read DIO with the O compromised by the placement of the wreath.
