CILICIA, Issos. Circa 380-370 BC. AR Stater (10.28 gm, 12h). Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet / Head of young Herakles(?) left. Brindley, "Early Coinages Attributable to Issus," NC 1993, Group 6, c (dies 2/d); Robinson, "A Stater of Issos," NC 1949, pg. 119 (same dies); otherwise unpublished in the standard references. Good VF, lightly toned, struck with worn obverse die, two flan cracks, overstruck on uncertain undertype. Extremely rare issue, only four recorded by Brindley. ($2000)

Other than the Robinson specimen, the other three appeared at auction: Lanz 32 (29 April 1985), lot 282; Numismatic Fine Arts 23 (14 December 1989), lot 617; and Hess-Leu (12-13 April 1962), lot 323. All were struck from the same pair of dies.
