BYZANTINE. Bronze processional cross. Circa 5th-6th century AD. Surviving height 7 1/2 inches (190mm). A bronze equal arm cross with ball terminals at ends. Originally attached to a staff for carrying in religious processions. The staff was broken off, and at a later period a heavy, crude S-link chain was added to create a pectoral cross. A tag glued to one arm reads in German "Crusader period, (purchased 1907?) in Jerusalem". One arm of the cross bent and broken, dark green patina. An unusual Christian artifact from the Holy Land.
