CELTIC, Northern Gaul (Comata). Ambiani. Circa 125-100 BC. AV Stater (7.26 gm). Gallo-Belgic A Type. Celticized head of Apollo left / Disjointed driver guiding chariot left; rosette below and other patterns in fields. D&T 65; Scheers 63; Sills 299; cf. De la Tour 7886; cf. SCBC 2. VF for type, typical light scuff marks. Struck on an extraordinarily large flan, with all details of the design visible. ($7500)

The obverse has evolved considerably from the Apollo prototype on the Macedonian staters of Philip II, and some suggest it now portrays a Celtic goddess rather than the Greek god.
