EUBOEA, Karystos. Circa 197-146 BC. Æ 17mm (4.06 gm). Head of Zeus right / Eagle standing right with wings open. Cf. BCD 592; cf. BMC Central Greece pg. 103, 22; cf. SNG Copenhagen 427. VF, green patina.

Ex BCD Collection. Collector's ticket records coin purchased in vicinity of Karystos.

Although the references all describe this head as laureate, the photographed specimens in both the BMC and SNG Copenhagen are so worn as to make such an attribution less than certain. While the BCD example appears to be laureate, the absence of the typical wreath ties, also the case with our specimen, suggests the head gear is nothing more than a taenia, and thus a reworking of the earlier Poseidon head.
