CELTIC, Britain. Corieltauvi. Circa 40-10 BC. AV Stater (5.55 gm). South Ferriby Snakes Type. Wreath motif with brick-like leaves facing inwards and curled snake above ‘spike’ / Lunate Celtic horse left, large six pointed star below. Hobbs 3148-78; Van Arsdell 811; SCBC 390. Toned VF, coppery gold, boldly struck. ($500)

Ex David Miller, May 1999.

This and the following lot are both called ‘Snakes’ on account of the coiled ornament on the obverse which seems to have a head with mouth open. A distinctive design feature of all Corieltauvian staters is that their horses are composed of crescent moons.
