CELTIC, Britain. Durotriges. Circa 58-45 BC. AR Stater (5.80 gm). Cranborne Chase Type. Durotrigan wreath pattern with upward-facing leaves / Triple-tailed disjointed Celtic horse left, large blobs above, ‘coffee bean’ behind, large pellet below. Hobbs 2525-54; Van Arsdell 1235; SCBC 365. Near EF, good quality bright silver, well centered horse. ($300)

Ex Blandford Forum Hoard, Dorset, 1998.

Cranborne Chase staters of a similar weight and appearance in the Corfe Common (Dorset) hoard contained between 10% and 15% gold (Hobbs 2525-2546), and thus it is likely that this coin may have a similar alloy.
