SASANIAN KINGS of PERSIA. Yazdgard I. 399-420 AD. AR Drachm (3.96 gm). STH (Istakhr) mint. "The Mazda worshipper, the divine joy of the Empire, Yazdgard / the king of kings of Iran and non-Iran" in Pahlavi (crude), crowned and cuirassed bust right, crescent on forehead / "Yazdgard" left, "fire" right in Pahlavi (crude), fire altar with attendants and ribbon; mint signature on central column, "st-..." in Pahlavi above flames. Cf. Göbl I/1 (for type); Paruck -; Alram -; MACW -; De Morgan -. Good VF, struck with worn dies. Unpublished with two-line legend. ($500)

Ex Spink 1100 (12 October 1993), lot 445.

The obverse legend begins in the outer line behind the crown, and continues counter-clockwise to the outer line before the bust. The second line begins in the lower line before the bust, continuing counter-clockwise to the inner line behind the crown. On the reverse, the second part of the inscription above the flames is illegible, but appears to not be an "h" and therefore not a copy of the mint signature.
