SASANIAN KINGS of PERSIA. Ardashir II. 379-383 AD. AV Dinar (7.14 gm). Kabul mint. "The Divine Ardashir, the king of kings" in Pahlavi (crude), crowned and cuirassed bust right / Degraded Pahlavi legend, fire altar without attendants. Göbl I/3; Paruck -; Alram 830; MACW -; De Morgan pl. 54, 9 (Shahpur II). Good VF, light encrustation. Rare. [See color enlargement on plate 8] ($4000)

Ex Giessener Münzhandlung 33 (3 June 1986), lot 279.

The obverse legend appears to begin at the front of the bust, and a number of the letters appear retrograde. The mint attribution is based on the close similarity of style to dinars of Shahpur II that Göbl assigned to Kabul (cf. Göbl, Kushan 1310).
