KINGS of THRACE. Kotys III. Circa 30-20 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.93 gm). Wreathed head of Dionysos right, somewhat degraded / HRAKLEOU SWTHROS QRAKWN, Herakles standing facing, head left, holding club and lion's skin; M to left. Cf. CCCBM I 239; Prokopov 4 (same obverse die); Lukanc -. VF. Very rare. ($1000)

Prokopov has proposed dating this coinage to the period after M. Licinius Crassus when, having defeated the Dacians, Bastarnians, and Bessi in 29-28 BC, he turned their territory over to the loyal Kotys III of Thrace. The newly conquered territory included a famous shrine of Dionysos, and Kotys struck this coin to indicate the land and temple were now in his possession.
