KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24.5mm, 3h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Tarsos mint. Struck under Philotas or Philoxenos. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, Nike standing right, holding wreath aloft; monogram below throne. Price 3038 corr. (monogram); Newell, Tarsos 43 (unlisted obv. die); ANS inv. 1944.100.33683 (same dies); Berlin obj. no. 18251087 (same rev. die). In NGC encapsulation 4372878-036, graded Ch VF.

The exergue on this coin, as well as the ANS (Newell) and Berlin pieces from the same reverse die, is off the flan, and may contain the further control mark of either Price 3039 or 3042. Moreover, the portrait style of this obverse die is more consistent with these two later issues. No other examples in Pella or CoinArchives, however, match either die.
