Postumus. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 260-269. Antoninianus (22mm, 3.29 g, 1h). Mint I. Group IIIa (AD 263-265). IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / P M TR P IIII COS III P P, Mars walking right, holding spear and sceptre. AGK 64 note; RIC V 57 var. (rev. type); Cunetio 2407. VF, higher silver content, minor porosity. Rare.

Ex Heidelberger Mūnzhandlung 30 (6 April 2000), lot 566.

AGK records just two specimens of this type, which portrays Mars holding a sceptre over his shoulder instead of a trophy (from the Cunetio and Oliver’s Orchard hoards, both from the same reverse die as this coin). Schulzki attributes this variation to a die-sinker’s error.
