KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Kassander. Circa 325-310 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 16.98 g, 8h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in Macedon or Greece. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; MΦ monogram in left field, KA monogram below throne. Unpublished. VF, toned, a few small deposits. Extremely rare.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, purchased from Classical Numismatic Group, December 1997.

The style of the obverse is close to later issues at Amphipolis, as well as a few issues that Price placed under “uncertain Greece.” The KA monogram is most often associated with the issues of Kalchedon (Kallatis in Price), but the style and lack of royal title discounts that mint.
