IONIA, Teos. Circa 425-412 BC. AR Stater (24mm, 11.78 g). Griffin seated right, raising forepaw; bee above / Quadripartite incuse square. Matzke –; Balcer Group LXXVI, 133 (A133/P– [unlisted rev. die]); SNG Copenhagen –; BMC 20 (same obv. die). VF, lightly toned, area of flat strike, short hairline flan crack, light cleaning marks. Rare.

Balcer originally placed this issue among a series he dated to the second period of Athenian control over Teos, circa 412-407 BC, but Kinns (pp. 163–4) noted the conjectural nature of this attribution, and noted numerous stylistic features that were contiguous from the prior group of staters. Thus, the break in coinage noted by Balcer is certainly incorrect, and this coinage must directly succeed the prior issues dated circa 450-425 BC.
