422, Lot: 84. Estimate $150.
Sold for $280. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.22 g, 12h). Sardes mint. Struck under Menander, circa 324/3 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. Unpublished, but same obv. die as ADM I Series X, 78a (= Price 2568). EF, lightly toned. Well centered. Extremely rare, possibly the only example known (see below).

It is possible that this issue is known; ADM I Series X, 78b describes the reverse controls as “obscure”, which may indicate that control marks were expected, but cannot be seen–possibly because none are present on that coin. Unfortunately, the piece is not illustrated in ADM, nor can it be found in Pella.
