Anonymous. 211-208 BC. AR Denarius (17.3mm, 3.73 g, 1h). AL series. Mint in central Italy. Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) behind / The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback right; AL (ligate) below, ROMA in partial linear frame in exergue. Crawford 111/1a; Sydenham 276; Aelia 1; Type as RBW 504. VF, toned, some cleaning scratches. Very rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex RBW Collection duplicate, purchased from J. Pedersen, 13 April 1991.

Another very rare type where Crawford could not determine the mint. He places it right at the end of the second Punic war section; in fact, AL is the very last coin before the post-war types start, but this more reflects his uncertainty than a date sequencing. Though the coin has multiple cleaning scratches, it is from known dies. [A. McCabe]
