414, Lot: 712. Estimate $100.
Sold for $190. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

INDIA, Mughal Empire. Uncertain ruler. Brass Counterfeiter’s die for reverse of AR Rupee. Possibly manufactured in the early to mid 19th century. Dimensions: overall length, 12mm; diameter, 29mm at face, tapering to approximately 26mm at base. Of cylindrical form. Weight: 63.80 grams. Brass die to imitate reverse of uncertain mint (Dar al-Khalifat Ahmadabad?) rupee dated RY 23. As made, dark brown patina.

This die is atypical of other counterfeiter’s dies, which were made by making casts of genuine coins. The blundered calligraphy, most notably the mint formula, as well as the overall fabric, suggests this die may have been created for minting jeweler’s copies.
