SICILY, Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. AR Didrachm (20mm, 8.47 g, 8h). Horseman riding left, preparing to cast javelin / Forepart of man-headed bull right within circular incuse. Jenkins, Gela, Group Ib, 15 (O6’’/R8); HGC 2, 364. Near EF, toned, some die wear on obverse, area of deposit on reverse with fine cleaning marks.


This lot includes a photocopy of a 1961 letter from G. Muller at Spink, to the then-current owner of this coin, P. Chapman, who had asked Mr. Muller to have the coin checked for authenticity by the British Museum. The BM concluded that the coin was genuine.
