Anonymous. Circa 155-149 BC. Æ As (32mm, 20.71 g, 5h). Dolphin (fourth) series. Rome mint. Laureate head of bearded Janus; I (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; above, dolphin right; I (mark of value) to right, [ROMA] below. Crawford – (but cf. 211 [Q. ME in place of dolphin] and 212 [crescent in place of dolphin]); Sydenham –; Type as RBW –; Unpublished. VF, dark brown surfaces, some roughness. Extremely rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex RBW Collection duplicate; Sternberg FPL 7 (August 1995), lot 108.

Crawford in RRC identified two bronze series with dolphins: RRC 80 with dolphin before the prow and RRC 160 with dolphin above the prow. Russo in Essays Hersh added a third series with dolphin above prow that was distinct from RRC 160; further research shows that the third dolphin series is from the same time and engraving hand as the S. FVRI series, RRC 151. To these three I now add a fourth dolphin series that is identical in style to RRC 211 (Q. ME.) and RRC 212 (crescent); this is the first piece published. Compare RRC pl. XXXIII, 14 and 17 for pieces in the same style. [Andrew McCabe]
