403, Lot: 528. Estimate $150.
Sold for $150. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

L. Papius. 79 BC. AR Serrate Denarius (18mm, 3.92 g, 8h). Rome mint. Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat-skin headdress; torch behind / Griffin springing right; stag’s head below. Cf. Crawford 384/1; Sydenham 773; Papia 1. VF. Scarce with these symbols. Unlisted reverse symbol in BMCRR Rome and CNR.

The symbol on the reverse that pairs with torch on the obverse is described by Crawford as a goat’s head. On this example it is clearly a stag’s head.
