Brown chalcedony amulet. Roman Egypt, Early Gnostic Period, 1st-2nd centuries AD. Chnoubis centered on gem face, his head to left, with tail wrapped in figure-eight. His head is radiant, with Greek inscription XNOVBIC arranged around the rays. Flanking the deity is a crescent and a comet. On back, small looping motif around a comet and crescent, and, below, SSS with a line through the center (the symbol of Chnoubis). Dimensions: 28x21mm. Intact. A wonderful specimen. Cf.
