361, Lot: 971. Estimate $100.
Sold for $220. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Sestertius (28mm, 18.05 g, 6h). Contemporary imitation of a Rome mint issue. Uncertain mint. Struck circa AD 194 or later. [L S]EPT SEV PERT AV[G IMP III], laureate head right / VIR AVS....COS II P P, Hercules, holding club and lion’s skin, and Bacchus, holding cantharus and thyrsus, standing left, side by side; between them, panther seated left, head right. Cf. RIC IV 669a for prototype. Near VF, tan surfaces with patches of red and touches of green. Interesting.

Ex Peus 372 (30 October 2002), lot 1253.

Most likely a contemporary imitation as the obverse style is off for Severus’ portrait, the reverse legend is incorrect (VIR AVS... versus the correct DIS AVSPICIB...), and the S C is missing entirely.
